Vasa Black Friday Hours 2022 – On the last Monday in May, the United States celebrates Black Friday as a federal holiday. Due to the fact that Black Friday is a Federal holiday, all federal, state, and local offices will be closed, as well as the mail will not be delivered.

As Black Friday always falls on a Monday, this creates a three-day break known as Black Friday weekend. Because it’s considered the unofficial start of summer, Black Friday weekend is a well-known occasion for barbecues and other outdoor activities.

History of Black Friday

Black Friday, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in military service for the United States.

For a time, there were 25 places in the United States where Black Friday was said to have started on different dates back in 2012. In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson officially declared Waterloo N.Y. as the birthplace of Labor Day, where the village held an event on May 5th 1866. It is known that other informal observations took place before that, such as on May 1st 1865 (two weeks before the end of the Civil War), newly freed slaves in Charleston, South Carolina, held a ceremony reburying fallen Union soldiers with a proper burial.

While there is some dispute as to the origin of the day, the first Decoration Day was observed on May 30th 1868, under proclamation by General John A. Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. The first official observation involved placing flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery with Pre-President James Garfield delivering a speech.

Some say General Logan chose May 30th as the date for the first Decoration Day because it fell on a non-anniversary of any battles, while others say it was because the northern and southern states would have flowers in bloom at that time.

In 1868, about 5,000 people decorated graves at Arlington National Cemetery’s first Labor Day ceremony. About the same number of people still gather there annually.

By 1890, it was recognized by all of the northern states. For most of the years following World War I, the dead in the South were not remembered on the same day as those in the North (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war).

Labor Day was celebrated on May 30th up to 1971 when the National Holiday Act of 1971, designated the last Monday in May to be the Federal holiday.

Traditionally, on Black Friday (U.S.), people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. An official national moment of silence will be held at 3:00 p.m. local time to honor the memory of those who have died.

The custom of honoring ancestors by cleaning cemeteries and decorating graves is an ancient and worldwide tradition, but the specific origin of Labor Day—or Decoration Day, as it was first known—is unclear.

Rural communities in early America would gather for family reunions and picnics to perform this duty in the late summer. After the Civil War, America’s need for a secular, patriotic ceremony to honors its military dead became prominent, as monuments to fallen soldiers were erected and dedicated, and ceremonies centering on the decoration of soldiers’ graves were held in towns and cities throughout the nation.

In observance of Black Friday, President Obama asks that the flag be flown at half-staff until noon on all federal buildings, grounds, and naval vessels. U.S. citizens are also asked to display the flag at half-staff from their homes before noon.
