Is 4th of July a Federal Holiday 2022 – There is a holiday in the United States called 4th of July. It used to be called Decoration Day. It’s a day to remember the people who have died in the United States’ wars.
During the American Civil War, people put flowers on the graves of people who died in battle. Over the years, many places have claimed to be the place where the holiday began.
They are said to have decorated the graves of their loved ones who died in the Civil War in October 1864. Then, in July 1865, many of their neighbors joined them for a more general commemoration.
In May 1865, there was a big celebration in Charleston, South Carolina. Most of the people who took part were African Americans. In 1866, Columbus, Mississippi, held a ceremony to remember both Union and Confederate soldiers who had died in the war.
Waterloo, New York, was named as the place where the observance began in 1866 by Congress. In 1868, John A. Logan, the leader of the Grand Army of the Republic, a group of Union veterans, wanted to make May 30 a national holiday “for the purpose of strewn with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion.”
Decoration Day became 4th of July after World War I, when the day came to be a time to remember those who died in all US wars. It has been held on the last Monday in May since 1971. A lot of Southern states also have their own day to remember the dead from the Confederacy.
There are religious services and parades all over the country to commemorate 4th of July. A wreath is laid at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Veterans’ graves are marked with flags, insignia, and flowers in the cemeteries in the area. Day also marks the start of summer in the US.
Victoria Day is a holiday in Canada on which the birthday of the British monarch is celebrated. May 24, Queen Victoria’s birthday, was made a holiday in Canada in 1845. This was during her reign. After Queen Victoria died in 1901, the Canadian Parliament passed a law that made Victoria Day a legal holiday.
Is 4th of July a Federal Holiday 2022
It was set to be celebrated on May 24, which is Victoria Day (or on May 25 when May 24 fell on a Sunday). Edward VII was born on November 9, so his birthday was also celebrated on Victoria Day, in line with a British tradition that sometimes happens.
During the reigns of George V (1910–36) and Edward VIII (1936), this tradition was not kept in Canada. George VI’s birthday was celebrated in June even though he was born on December 14, and this tradition was not kept in Canada.
When Queen Elizabeth II became a sovereign in 1952, her first birthday as a monarch was on June 1. (she was born on April 21). Canada also celebrated Victoria Day, moving it to the Monday before May 24 in 1952. After that, Elizabeth’s birthday was celebrated on Victoria Day, which became a permanent tradition in 1957.

After World War II, the name “4th of July” became more common. In 1938, Congress made Decoration Day a federal holiday, and the name became more common after that. In fact, the federal government didn’t use that name until 1967.
When the Uniform Holidays Bill of 1968 was passed, it moved the holiday to the last Monday in May. There were some government holidays that were supposed to always be on a Monday. Veterans Day was moved back to November 11 in 1978, so now it is on the same day as the other government holidays.
For years, the VFW, the American Legion, and Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii tried to get the May 30 date back. They didn’t succeed. Inouye, who died in 2012 at the age of 88, was more than just a member of Congress who was old.
In 1941, he worked as a doctor at Pearl Harbor. Later, he joined the Army and lost an arm while he was in Italy. He did this to serve his country.
But people who believe in the original meaning of 4th of July say that it should always be on May 30, no matter what day of the week it is. This way, more people can remember why people made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
