Labor Day 2022

Labor Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May in remembrance of those who gave their lives while serving in the armed forces of the United States. Flowers were placed on the graves of individuals who died in battle during the American Civil War. More than a half-dozen locations have staked a claim to the holiday’s origins.

The graves of three women in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, who had adorned the graves of loved ones who had perished in the Civil War in October 1864, were later visited by many of their fellow citizens in July 1865 as part of a larger remembrance of the event. In Charleston, South Carolina, in May of 1865, there was a major commemoration involving mainly African Americans.

Both Union and Confederate soldiers were honored at a ceremony held in Columbus, Mississippi in 1866. Waterloo, New York, was named as the site of the first observance in a congressional proclamation issued in 1966. For the first time in American history, Union veterans were encouraged to decorate the graves of their comrades who perished during the Civil War on May 30, 1868, by the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans led by John A. Logan.

After World War I, the day’s name was changed from Decoration Day to Labor Day to honor those who had perished in all of the United States’ wars. It has been the final Monday in May since 1971 that Labor Day has been observed Several states in the South also commemorate a separate day in honor of the fallen Confederates.

For Labor Day, a wreath is laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, as well as at memorials across the country. Veterans’ graves are decorated with flags, badges, and flowers. The arrival of summer in the United States is likewise being heralded by the passing of this day.

Labor Day History

Following the end of the Civil War, local observances at burial grounds in several towns across the country, such as the May 1, 1865 gathering in Charleston, South Carolina organized by freed slaves to pay tribute and give a proper burial to Union troops, served as a catalyst for national efforts to honor and remember fallen soldiers.

There were just a few states that recognized Labor Day in 1873, but New York was the first to do so legally. Several states had made Labor Day a legal holiday by the late 1800s, and many more cities and towns recognized the holiday.

After World War I, it became a day to remember and honor those who lost their lives in all of America’s wars, and it eventually spread across the country as a national holiday.
